Who are Kids Against Hunger?

The mission of Kids Against Hunger, a humanitarian food-aid organization, is to significantly reduce the number of hungry children in the USA and to feed starving children throughout the world. Kids Against Hunger is not affiliated with or restricted to a particular religious group and does not discriminate on any basis when distributing its meals.

The organization’s approach to achieving its goal – the eradication of world hunger – includes the packaging of a highly nutritious, vitamin-fortified soy-rice casserole by volunteers at numerous locations within the USA and Canada, and the distribution of those meals to starving children and their families in over 60 countries through partnerships with humanitarian organizations worldwide. Last year alone, volunteers at Kids Against Hunger’s food packaging centers across the USA packaged forty million meals for children and their families around the world and around the corner.

The Kids Against Hunger food packaging network consists of the organization’s International Headquarters office located in Omaha, NE, offices in Colorado, Minnesota, and Missouri, and close to 75 independent non-profit food packaging “satellites” across the U.S. and Canada.

Kids Against Hunger was incorporated in 1999 and is a nonprofit organization recognized by the IRS for tax-deductible donations under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

What does Kids Against Hunger do?

Highly Nutritious Meals
Kids Against Hunger packages highly nutritious, life-saving meals for starving children and malnourished children and their families in developing countries and the United States. The goal of the organization is for its meals to provide a stable nutritional base from which recipient families can move their families from starvation to self-sufficiency. Kids Against Hunger accomplishes this by mobilizing the energy and caring of American children, teens, and adults on behalf of hungry children around the world. Kids Against Hunger seeks to end the literal hunger of children receiving the meals, but also satisfies a hunger among prosperous Americans – a hunger for meaning and contribution.

Fulfilling Kids Against Hunger’s mission requires a vast food packaging capacity to meet an endless demand for food. Because physical constraints of the International Headquarters facility initially prevented further growth in production, the organization began expanding its operations by setting up food packaging “satellites”. Kids Against Hunger believes that the best way to engage the largest number of people is through a decentralized, locally-based network of food packaging satellites that are active in their community. This model engages and empowers people to realize they can make a difference in solving the worldwide problem of starvation and establishes relationships with organizations such as Kiwanis, Rotary, and many faith-based groups of widely varying denominations. This growth strategy also allows the organization to continuously expand its food packaging capacity and volunteer involvement.

The process of establishing a meal packaging satellite is easy. Individuals and groups who are passionate about feeding children license the Kids Against Hunger name, food formulation, and packaging process. This agreement governs product content and quality, as well as adherence to best practices. Each satellite is a separate 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, and all of them are using volunteers in the same manual process to package the standardized food formulation for distribution to dozens of countries all over the globe.

It is Kids Against Hunger’s goal to develop this food packaging network, over the next ten years, with a two-tiered approach of local packaging satellites and regional divisions. Through this structure, Kids Against Hunger expects to generate the capacity to produce over one billion meals per year.

Since its launch, Kids Against Hunger has provided over 1 billion meals for children and their families in more than 60 countries through the efforts of hundreds of thousands of volunteers.

Why does Kids Against Hunger do what they do?

Global Hunger

Malnutrition
It is estimated that 684,000 child deaths worldwide could be prevented by increasing access to vitamin A and zinc (Source: WFP Annual Report 2007) Undernutrition contributes to 53 percent of the 9.7 million deaths of children under five each year in developing countries. According to the most conservative United Nations statistics, over 16,000 children die every day due to hunger-related diseases before they reach five years of age (Source: Human Rights Council. “Resolution 7/14. The right to food”. United Nations, March 27, 2008, p. 3), but this number could be as great as 40,000 people if you include those aged five and older. Statistics vary between the United Nations World Food Programme and UNICEF, but the fact remains: even one child is one too many!

This challenge is greater than one man and his vision. This challenge is greater than one organization. It will take all of our combined efforts to address this most pressing issue. The problem is not finding volunteers, or one of logistics, although these are real issues. We have the food solution. The real problem is finding the funding necessary to achieve the goal. We must continue to raise awareness of the issue of world hunger, specifically how it is affecting the children of the world, so that the resources that are available can be focused on what is arguably the most pressing issue of our time: that of STARVATION!

The food also accommodates to the broad diversity of ethnic tastes and religious differences around the world.

Kids Against Hunger’s meals offer all nine of the essential amino acids required for complete nutrition – something that can’t be said about other typical food relief sources such as rice or beans alone.

The beauty of the food formulation is its simplicity. It is made from four readily available, dry ingredients that are easy to package, keep for long periods, and require only boiling with water to prepare. Despite the simplicity of the food’s content, it is a nutritionally complex and well balanced meal.
